I think for senior citizens who rarely use their phones, the best plan would be a prepaid one with no contract like the one offers by TracFone. The phones are very cheap plus many already comes with free minutes. I think you can go as cheap as $9.99 for a phone and spend about $7 a month. Most seniors I know don't care about gadgets and things of that source so this is definitely the best bang for the bucks.

The Verizon plan costs $60 PER MONTH... and yes, it is expensive for some, but in some places, cell phone coverage is spotty, and pre-paid phone plans with zero custommer support is not a good options for seniors... this is the situation my father is in and I hate that all that money is being wasted, but where he lives, Verizon is the only reliable option...

BTW, that's $30/month for Verizon's individual plan (200 "anytime" minutes plus 500 "night/weekend" minutes) and $60/month for the Verizon's family plan of two or more phones (450 "anytime minutes)...
sorry for any mixup

I have both of my grandmothers on a family share plan with me so it is only $9.99 for each of them and they share my minutes, which they never use. Then they get the benefit of free mobile-to-mobile, etc.

Hey I got a tracfone not so long ago for my wife and myself, and whilst I'm very happy with the phone we got, the cost of the minutes, the fact that we don't get hit by a bill at the end of the month, and know exactly what we're spending. If the coverage isn't good for your father, then tracfone isn't an option. I suppose we're lucky to have the good reception we have, but half the reason we have it, is for emergencies.

I got a plan with consumer cellular that has a flexible plan. I can change it to a cheaper plan if I don't use many minutes, or bump it up to the next plan if I go a little over. The plans are as low as $10. They have different phones to choose from and you do have to pay an activation fee. I think my initial cost for the phone/activation was $90. But I like being able to save money with this company. Also, the coverage is great where we live.
